Trend colour 2021

Green is the trend for 2021 - A trend forecast by Lidewij Edelkoort

Green will be the fashion colour of summer 2021

Dutch trend researcher Lidewij Edelkoort said this in her trend presentation "Green Wave". After a predominantly brown winter, which Edelkoort predicted for the coming autumn, she believes that a green summer is a logical continuation. This green also includes shades of brown with green tones, such as discoloured grasses or new foliage on old branches.

It is an optimistic, cheerful green, said Edelkoort, who was slightly positive about the future for the first time in a long time. Edelkoort: "A lot is happening right now on the way to a sustainable future. Do you see the growing reluctance to shop during promotions like Black Friday? Or when I look at my students: they are all working with new materials, new yarns, reusing clothes, making less but better.... that inspires hope. It is a challenging and fun time. It is not frightening.

Green, mint green, bottle green

The green for summer 2021 is a mirror of hope. Inspiration comes from plants and leaves, vegetables, cacti and flowers.

The colour cards for spring/summer 2021 show a wide spectrum of greens and complementary colours - such as a diluted blue-green, but also tinted whites, reds and yellows. Edelkoort expects to see an increasing use of alternative yarns and fabrics such as nettle and pineapple, linen and even paper. "We need to reduce the use of cotton in fashion and find alternatives to this favourite water-consuming fabric. This leads to more tactility, stiff or fluffy soft fabrics, summery brocades and jaquards. Or to new processes like "deep sea wash" for denim, natural dyeing techniques with flowers or vegetables, like textiles dyed with avocado.

Timeless basics made from robust materials

In addition, the trend researcher identifies a lack of new basics without much embellishment and calls for this gap to be closed. "The demand for well-made, timeless clothing made from solid materials is growing." According to Edelkoort, a new modernity is at hand that focuses on simple clothing: aprons, skirts, straight jackets and trousers made of robust fabrics.

"But there is also room for floral prints and sheer fabrics in summer 2021, also in the direction of "more dressed up", says Edelkoort. "A touch of romance goes very well with the new fashion." This includes embroidered details, small prints and underwear with a romantic touch.
